A Dream Come True

For as long as I can remember I have wanted to go to Africa. In the West, what we see and what we hear of Africa is not positive. Every image on television is a picture of poverty, suffering and violence. However, as a product of the West, I know the West omits the ugly parts of our history, we do not learn our country's true history in elementary and secondary school. When I visited Cuba as an adult, I was surprised by how knowledgeable  Cubans were about  American history, more specifically, the Embargo, while their American counterparts knew extraordinarily little about the policy our country imposed on their land. Unfortunately, that is indicative of many in the West and by that, I mean, the United States and Europe have contributed to modern day state of Africa in terms of its resources and political stability.

We in the West have this attitude that there is "nobody better than us," and consequently, give off the impression that we are better than the rest of the world. Nonetheless for a certain generation there has always been a draw to Africa because inwardly there has always been a longing to know where we come from. The American of African descent does not really know where we are from, that part of our culture and connection was cut off over the generations from slavery, but it does not disconnect the longing to want to relate to our roots of DNA. Now it is not likely that my African DNA stems from Zimbabwe, I know this. What we know from history is that most of the Africans that came to the West were prominently from the Igbo ethnic group in Nigeria and the Congolese from Congo. But the continent is the continent and I longed to be on it wherever I could land.

To that end, what most people do not know about me is that during the pandemic, a ministry was birthed in me. I was sitting on my deck, and my kids were attending school online, and everybody had their own space. I was sitting on my deck thinking how comfortable we were, in fact I am one of the few people that did not mind being in quarantine. Yet, it was during those times, I would communicate with people around the world in Brazil, South Africa, Nigeria, England, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Bahamas, and Jamaica praying, doing bible studies, and encouraging one another to hold on (and post pandemic, Rwanda). And it was in those moments where I thought and prayed, “Lord, help me be the answer to many of these individual's prayers.” I know I am just one person. I am extremely limited in my ability to change things globally, but as the popular quote states: “As one person I cannot change the world, but I can change the world of one person.” God has allowed me to do some terrific things in the lives of His people, some that I have met personally and some that I have not. Let me be clear, we do not do this for anything in return, only prayer for my family. We do ministry for the love of God’s people…. And I will say this quite often, but it is for the love of God's people because the body of Christ is just not my family, my city, my church, my state, or my country. The body of Christ is global body of believers. “A new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another; as I have loved you, that also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.” (John 13:34-35). “Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14-16)

So, as I reflect on my journey, it is a dream come true that God has allowed me to meet people that I have communicated with over the years, to see the country that I pray for and now LOVE. I am so full of gratitude for every person God planted along the way, I do not take it lightly because in every stage of the journey there and back, God put somebody there to assist us. So, the next few lines will be a testimony of some sort to tell you of those persons I will forever pray for because in the moment there was an exchange of love and kindness that only comes from God.

The reflections I write have become so intricate to who I am, and so dear to my heart that words really cannot describe how amazing it is that God is connecting His sons and his daughters across continents. I am honored you visited.  Thank you and God bless.
